On 13 June, the Adam data center in Cerdanyola del Vallès welcomed an international delegation of representatives from EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the European Commission, and other leading institutions from the European scientific and technological ecosystem. CloudFerro, cloud services provider for EUMETSAT, is responsible for deploying the technical infrastructure for the Destination Earth project. The visit was part of the broader rollout of Destination Earth, an ambitious European initiative aimed at building a digital replica of the planet to anticipate and mitigate the effects of climate change and natural disasters.
Technology serving the planet: a European challenge based in Barcelona
Destination Earth, led by the European Commission, is a cornerstone of Europe’s digital and climate strategy. Its goal is to build a “digital twin Earth,” a virtual model of the planet capable of simulating natural phenomena and human activity with high precision.
Barcelona is becoming a strategic node in this ecosystem thanks to the direct connection between the BSC’s MareNostrum5 supercomputer and Adam’s data center via the Barcelona Data Bridge. This data bridge enables fast and secure data transfer between supercomputing systems and cloud environments.
CloudFerro trusts Adam for Destination Earth
CloudFerro, leading cloud services provider in Europe, has been tasked with deploying the infrastructure for Destination Earth on behalf of EUMETSAT. As part of this project, Adam provides CloudFerro with dedicated colocation services via a private cube at our Cerdanyola data center—an exclusive space that guarantees physical security, high availability, and technical scalability. The service includes interconnection with telecom operators, 24/7 local technical support, and compliance with the highest European standards for data protection and business continuity.
To develop Destination Earth, CloudFerro required a data center offering top-tier security, connectivity, and local support. After visiting our facilities and meeting the Adam technical team, their decision was clear.
“In order to deliver the highest standards of service at CloudFerro we only work with the best data centers in Europe. Choosing Adam’s data center in Barcelona for our Destination Earth portfolio was an easy decision, once we had visited their excellent facilities and spoken to their highly qualified and specialized local team. This, in addition to Adam’s comprehensive range of complementary services and their experts’ support during the implementation was key to our success. Our customers demand the delivery of top-level solutions – that’s why we choose the best suppliers ourselves”.
Marcin Ziółkowski
Project Management Lead at CloudFerro
For his part, Łukasz Kubowicz, Project Manager for the initiative, highlights the importance of working with a reliable local partner capable of delivering optimal connectivity to the BSC:
“Participating in DestinationEarth climate initiative, Europe’s most prestigious Earth modeling infrastructure projects, is a big challenge for CloudFerro. As a cloud computing service provider for the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), we needed a reliable local partner, able to deliver excellent infrastructure, data security and the best available connectivity for the data bridge to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. We found that in Adam.”
European institutions visit Adam’s data center
Following the official inauguration of the Barcelona Data Bridge at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the day continued with a technical visit to Adam’s data center in Cerdanyola del Vallès. The visit included representatives from the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the CSIC, Meteocat, the IEEC, and the Government of Catalonia.
During the visit, they explored Adam’s capabilities in connectivity, security, sustainability, and operational continuity —all key components for projects like Destination Earth. The day concluded with a technical exchange on the challenges facing climate data infrastructure in Europe.
